The Court Watchers
This animated short tells the true story of Carmen Johnson, a formerly incarcerated woman who began attending bond hearings and documenting the injustices she witnessed in court. Spending hours each day in the courtroom, Carmen would see defendants mocked by judges and prosecutors, bail set at unaffordable prices, trumped up charges that separated families and ruined livelihoods. Carmen started trainings others on the processes of court, teaching ordinary people how to document injustices and hold power accountable. Her group, Court Watch PG is a part of a national movement that seeks to engage citizens in the processes of the criminal legal system so that they can bear witness and enact change. The film features an original score by Fiona Apple with voice over narration by Apple and Jesse Williams.
